I think [.dt.sessions]sessionetc.com is invoked during logins. You should be able to start Mozilla from there. I don't use multiple workspaces myself (or Mozilla for that matter since it doesn't play well with the 8-bit color my ancient alpha 3400 provides), but apparently many applications respect -xrm "*workspaceList: ws0 ws1" where "ws0", ws1, etc. can also be the label names on the workspace switch. The people that run the journals compare articles see what has the most visits and then ask for more articles on the same topic. WE LIKE THAT, and it explains why Drew has written a number of articles on VMS. My hope is that this will become a trend and other Authors and journals will get on the band wagon. So I think that the discussion about the articles is not even what is being discussed but the visit statistic and how/why advertisers want to be on the web/web sites. Not being a real smart person myself I hesitate to make any judgments on other folks but most intelligent marketing/advertising people would look at a number of demographics and site visits would only be one statistics. There is software to determine if it is a unique visitor or a repeat, what country, what time of the day and so on. I know this because I get the data for the OpenVMS Technical Journal. Sue, Ken is getting some ribbing because he thought one of my postings was a legitimate HP press release and posted it on the vms.org website without reading it carefully :-) And in terms of usage statistics, many marketers do not really understand ho HTTP works and their definition of usage isn't exactly representative or real actual usage, but since that is how they want it, that is how web site managers calculate readership. A former VMS customer famous for making simulators fired an employee in the early days of the web because their logs showed he was constantly reading news from some web site all day long. In reality, he had some web page loaded in the background, but that web page had an automatic refresh every 5 minutes. The human resources department didn't understand this. > visits and then ask for more articles on the same topic. WE LIKE THAT, > and it explains why Drew has written a number of articles on VMS. And he should be encouraged, even if it means playing the numbers game and accessing the articles many times. > marketing/advertising people would look at a number of demographics and > site visits would only be one statistics. Sue, the web server logs has some technical information but no demographic information other then choice of browser. > There is software to > determine if it is a unique visitor or a repeat, what country, what > time of the day and so on. Sue, "unique vistors" is a concept which doesn't really exist. Consider users with javascript and cookies disabled, and you have no way to know if the user is returning to the same web page. You may be given statistic that say "unique visitors", but it isn't a number you should bet your own life on. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 21:25:12 -0500 From: Dave Froble Subject: Re: Hardware Today: HPC Server Snapshot Message-ID: <41E48A88.5080505@tsoft-inc.com> Barry Treahy, Jr. wrote: > Dave Froble wrote: > >> HP has an interest to present the appearance that itanic is more >> viable. I wouldn't call such anything to bet the farm on, and I also think it may have been some projections. I read as much news as I have time for, but don't really attempt to retain any details, just trends. It's just s number I think I read in the last several months. A composite feeling I get is that 64 bit x86, along with more 32 bit speed than anyone else, is acceptable to many people, and Intel will suffer because "who wants to buy second best?". They're going to use that concrete to build a giant canal to take all Wyoming's water to California for use in swimming pools, lawn watering and washing cars. ;-) The plant in Indonesia was located roughly where the need for the concrete was - in the flat land near the coast where most of the people lived. And in a location where the concrete cold be shipped up/down the coast to other populated areas. It is my understanding that there was only one major road along the coast in that area, so shipping by water made some economic sense. It's the same reason why taconite pellets are shipped by lake freighter from the west end of Lake Superior to the steel mills on Lake Michigan, Erie, and Ontario - it's much less expensive to do so than to transport via vail or truck. Where I live, one manufacturer of portland cement brings the powder in bulk from the kiln by boat in order to serve the local market. The kiln is located about 50 miles away for seveal reasons - land is cheaper and the NIMBY principle for the operation of nearly any nasty industrial processes. The local ready-mix plants mix the portland cement, aggregates, admixes, and water to form the wet concrete that is delivered ready-to-pour. Ready-mix concrete generally does not like to be in the truck longer than a couple hours unless costly additives are included in the mix which permit the concete to remain 'plastic' for up to 8 hours. These additive can increase the price per yard/metre by upwards of 25% or more. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 16:23:16 -0500 From: "Dan Allen" Subject: RE: Has anyone heard if any of our customers have been hurt by the tidal wave i Message-ID: > > The local ready-mix plants mix the portland cement, aggregates, admixes, and > water to form the wet concrete that is delivered ready-to-pour. I was under the impression that ready-mix trucks did not add the water to the (dry) ready mix until at the job site at which time it became ready-to-pour. Imagine a break down with 15 yards of wet ready-to-pour load on board. I thought the (dry) plasticizing agents are added to obtain workabilty of the (wet) poured mix (pumping, self-leveling, etc) with minimal or no increase in water (and the resulting loss of strength). I know anytime I've had concrete delivered the water was added and mixed while I watched. I know anytime I've had concrete > delivered the water was added and mixed while I watched. That was mix-on-site. Ready-mix is the norm in most urban areas for good reason - QC is easier to manage at the ready-mix yard than asking a driver to add water at the site. Most concrete specified for big commercial jobs is sampled pre-pour for slump and other properties which are discernable at that time. For critical jobs, small samples from each truckload are often poured into molds and allowed to cure before being crushed to the point of failure to ensure that the delivered and placed concrete meets specs. Very cool machines do this - watching a concrete core exploding under pressure is fun. You would not believe the crap or incorrect mix that the delivery companies try to dump into the concrete either on-site or at the ready-mix plant. And yes, the drivers get very nervous when the 15 yard drum hasn't been emptied after a couple hours. There are different additives for different needs. Check the Degussa and Euclid Chemicals web sites for examples. They have more chemicals for concrete than HP has toner cartridges. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:46:00 -0500 From: JF Mezei Subject: Re: Has anyone heard if any of our customers have been hurt by the tidal wave i Message-ID: <1105475744.f2b148c95de8c3aec27ae7e3dd68737e@teranews> > > Then what is that concrete plant doing in Laramie, Wyoming? I didn't say that all concrete plants were near water. But for large bulk transport, waterways are far more efficient. There are large boats that carry bulk concrete. West of Kingston Ontario Canada, right on the shores of the St-Lawrence River, Lafarge has a plant. There is a huge elevated conveyor that passes over the road to Lafarge's own dock on the river where large freighers will dock and get loaded with tons of concrete direct from the plant. From there, Lafarge can efficently ship large amounts of concrete not only to great lakes and St-Lawrence locations, but also to any port in the atlantic. Obviously, economics and time to deliver will decide which plant provides best/cheapest delivery to customer. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 22:18:06 -0700 From: Lorin Ricker Subject: Re: Help - SYSUAF and $SETUAI on UAI$_USER_DATA field Message-ID: On Fri, 07 Jan 2005 11:20:20 -0800, Ken Fairfield wrote: >$GETUAIU/$SETUAI _will_ respect Process or other logical names. >However, those logicals _must_ be define /EXECUTIVE, that's the key. > >I won't reproduce here a complete demo, but we have an old-ish >program (which happens to be written in Fortran but that's not >relevant) which calls $GETUAI to return various items from the >SYSUAF & RIGHTSLIST. That is not so strange. Most SAP implementations are long and painful excercises. Rather than limitations in the software, the key question is 'How to eat a dinosaur?' One bite at a time, of course or you'll have an indigestion. At a time where IA64 is widthdrawing from markets, retreating to high end computing only, it is nteresting to see Power not only stay on top of the high end computing, but also expand at the low end, often beyond traditional computers (eg: game consoles). Today, Apple announced a cheap $500 mac (6.5 * 6.5 * 2 inches !) http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html And yes, it uses older PowerPC G4 chips. But that is the way to create truly low cost machines, while you keep your leading edge Power5 chips for the high end stuff. Seems to me that IA64 has no chance of survival. Power already has volumes that IA64 can never have. There is no way that Intel can continue to economically sink money for a chip that only gives it chip revenus. In the case of Alpha and Pa-Risc, the chips generated hefty profits for systems and sofwtare sales at Digital/HP respectively. IBM not only gets the benefits of Power for its systems and software sales, but it also has the volume sales to folks like Apple and game console manufacturers to help lower the cost of Power. Power scales from miniature computers to some of the world's fastest supercomputers. It has achieved what IA64 had originally promised to achieve. And when you consider that so far, IA64 shipments have been made to key marketing customers who probably didn't pay much for the privilege of being poster boys for IA64, it explains why IA64 revenus are just a fraction of what they had been expected to be. Neither HP nor Intel can afford to give away such systems much longer before customers are actually starting to be interested in paying for those. In 2004, both intel and HP did absolutely NOTHING to stop the rumours that IA64 was sinking and in fact increased those rumours with plenty of leaks about how Itanic was not coming up to expectations, and then retrenching it from markets, at first, just workstations, and then small/medium size servers. "We are very committed to IA64" is even less credible than Compaq's statements of "we are very comitted to Alpha" made prior to June 25th 2001. Perhaps Intel had bet on AMD going belly up. (perhaps Intel had helped place Palmer there to help AMD's bankrupcy ?). With AMD gone, Intel could have slowly killed the 8086 and made IA64 industry standard. But as was evident last year, the introduction of AMD's 64 bit 8086 forced Intel to completely cancel its plans to kill the 8086 because not only had AMD not disapeared, but they were now gaining solid ground and much credibility with superior chips. So Intel had to do a 180 and announce a 64 bit 8086 to stay in the competition. Another sign that Intel had given up on the bloated IA64 experiment. IA64 is worse off than Alpha ever was. In fact, I think that Alpha system sales might continue after HP has stopped selling IA64 systems. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 16:40:39 -0500 From: "Hein" Subject: Re: IA64 versus Power Message-ID: <41e44837@usenet01.boi.hp.com> "JF Mezei" wrote in message news:1105472644.1ba717617a3543885ed7e8b8187aad3a@teranews... > it is nteresting to see Power not only stay on top of the high > end computing, but also expand at the low end, often beyond traditional > computers (eg: game consoles). > > Today, Apple announced a cheap $500 mac (6.5 * 6.5 * 2 inches !) > http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html As you hint to, the Nintendo GameCube is powered by a 5 watt, 485 Mhz 'gekko' PowerPC http://www.nintendo.com/techspecgcn A got a new one with a game and 2 consoles for $99 for a Xmass present. What I'm basically trying to is have a shadow set, say DSA500 that consists of two devices, $1$DGA100: and $1$DGA200:. The first device is in site 1 and the second device is in site 2. The host will be in one of the two sites. I normally don't really care about MSCP-serving. While I'm in transition, I only sort of do, but within a few months all hosts will have fiber cards in them anyway. > Please let me know if the above is confusing! It is. Either I'm confused (probably not for the first time) or the documentation isn't clear enough. Are you saying that if I set the sysgen parameter for the host site, and do a set shadow/site=n $1$DGAnnn that the shadow driver will prefer reads from the local member? BTW, the help for SHADOW_SITE_ID in SYSGEN is incorrect. It states that this is a dynamic parameter when it isn't (VMS 7.3-2). They used to have a VAX-only Word-11->MSWord translator, but I never found out whether it worked or not, and apparently it wasn't popular enough for them to port to Alpha. If you're trying to get mostly text out of the thing, you can use Word-11 to print to disk as text (using DT filename), and then do whatever you want to with the file. (Including feeding it through ASCtoHTML and making HTML pages that you could probably then import into Word or something.) I wouldn't expect this process to preserve figures or fancy formatting, though. Or you can make a Postscript file and turn it into a PDF of your docs, I suppose. We're still running Word-11 because we haven't come up with a good way to get our scientific papers using Greek characters, etc, out of it in an automatic way. But we haven't been under support for 5+ years. -- Alan ------------------------------ Date: 11 Jan 2005 17:44:55 -0800 From: imyaman@gmail.com (vergence) Subject: OpenVMS Hobbyist CD Media... Having a CD with VMS on it can be extremely usefull in a catastrophe situation where you need to have a working copy of the software. The URL itself is a joke. You might agree? I don't see Fiorina as a joke. Her (hair) style, management style and her goons have ensured that HP prevented VMS from coming out of its hiding place at Compaq and shine again. The "under new management" would have been the perfect excuse to fix previous mistakes (such as the open word) and give VMS a chance. I see Fiorina, Stallard, Winkler etc as the enemy and view their speeches and staements as carefyully worded propaganda that sets the stage for their next moves, and thus must be scrutinized very carefully. I view VMS aws being a prisoner of war, having been captured by a competitor and kept in a dark and humid prison cell with just basis sustinance. HP have done nothing to earn the respect of VMS customers. We're loyal to VMS, not to HP. HP is a necessary evil because Digital failed under Palmer and Compaq failed under Capellas. And hopefully Fiorina will accept some cushy government job ASAP and *MAYBE* the new head of HP will bring VMS into the mainstream. I'm already doing a SORT using a /Specification file, with defined fields and conditions, etc., and doing a Difference on the original file with the sorted file. So adding the /Omit's and/or /Data's in producing the sorted file will be easy and could be the answer to my problem. :-) Thanks, Ken -- I don't speak for Intel, Intel doesn't speak for me... OK, I know some people have different kinds of jobs. But if I can't train a dedicated EDT user to either enter edit/edt, or to setup their own logical, initialization file, or such, then they won't be here very long. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 12:11:39 -0800 From: Ken Fairfield Subject: Re: Simple EDT or TPU init file Message-ID: Big John wrote: > Ken Fairfield wrote: > >>Big John wrote: >>>- so that whatever your keypad 1 key sends, it will be interpreted >>>by the TPU file as you intend. >>John, have you confirmed this actually works as expected??? >>I seem to recall that you can't redefine the "self-inserting" >>keys, i.e., the typing keys, letters and numbers, etc... >> >>On a "real" VT, you couldn't tell the difference because TPU >>puts the keypad in application mode on entry. If the street expects 10% higher revenues and revenues come in at 8% higher the stock could crater even if profits were higher than expected, or vice versa. It all depends what the analysts and company have been saying to investors in the weeks and months in advance of those reports. Read "Extraordinary Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" and "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" for further enlightenment on the psychology of investing and stock prices. The first book was written in 1841, while the second book's first edition came out in 1973 - both still hold lessons for investors today. Bottom line - things change but human behaviour doesn't. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:24:09 -0500 From: "John Smith" Subject: [OT]:Perfect complement for a VMS system as clients Message-ID: <4qydndpN_el5qHncRVn-sg@igs.net> http://www.apple.com/macmini/ Maybe Jobs would like to buy VMS from HP.
